“Is it the same piece of paper?” I asked to make sure I had understood Azul right.

He nodded and continued…

Even though the words on the paper were scribbled in a hurry, the boy recognized the writing – it was his father who had written the note.

“This means that the strangers in black uniforms that took Linda and her family are involved here too,” Azul thought, trying to connect the evidence he had found with the whole shadowy story. His parents had not gone off to work at some project at the laboratory. It was those people that had taken them. “While I was not here they probably got into the house… Dad tried to resist… But there were a lot of the people dressed in black. They took mum and dad, took their pistol and brought them to the laboratory building, after having turned over all the things in the house making sure that there was no gun there. But Mr. Miranderik had said that the monster had killed them… That means that he lied to me and that he is involved in the whole business somehow… It is even possible that he called me to the meeting so that I would not interfere with his evil doings….”

“So,” Jack interrupted the story once more, scratching his bearded chin, “that’s some interesting guesses. I have also been haunted by the suspicion that the so-nice-and-sweet Gingerbread Man does not have clean hands, or feet, or any other part of his body. So boy, go ahead! And with all the details please!”

Azul nodded obediently and returned to his memories…

The note he had found added new details to his parent’s disappearance and radically changed his initial assessment of what had happened. But what should Azul do now? Should he follow his father’s advice and run and hide in the jungle and try to live there without shelter and food and in the company of a bloodthirsty monster? Turn to the Sololeadas for help, when some of them could be in cahoots with the kidnappers and be ready to give him over to them straight away? Or should he try to find a way of getting into the GEC laboratory to try to find the key to the whole mystery there?

The last option was the most dangerous one, although it promised some valuable results. It could even be possible that Azul’s parents were still alive and that he would be able to find them. Inspired by the last thought the young Sudoceleste decided to go for the third option. He was not worried about the risk anymore, since he had nothing to lose. He attached a hank made of manila rope 140 to the lantern and went out onto the porch of the hut.

The night was silent and cool. A thin nascent moon forming a radiant arch shone from the dark sky amidst twinkling stars. Bats flew like silent shadows over the roofs of the wooden huts.

Azul went towards the company buildings, but he had not taken five steps before he heard a sound to his left.
